Why does New York State need more thorough legislation concerning equine welfare? The facts speak for themselves.

More than 600 Thoroughbreds a year have died while racing—not including countless more young horses that die in training.

In 2019 alone, more than 57,000 horses were shipped to Mexico and Canada for human consumption, their lives selling for just 60 cents per pound.

The USDA has documented that 92.3% of horses sent to slaughter are in good physical condition and capable of leading productive lives.

Over 50% of racing Thoroughbreds are presumed slaughtered.

For pharmaceutical purposes, including using pregnant mare urine (PMU) as the primary ingredient in hormone replacement therapy drugs like Premarin that have been proven to have safe, synthetically manufactured humane alternatives. Pregnant mares are confined for more than half their 11-month gestation in small standing stalls where they cannot turn or lie down while harnessed to urine collection devices, causing injury and chafing to their legs while also deliberately depriving them of water to increase estrogen levels. PMU foals are seen as byproducts and either die shortly after birth, unable to survive the harsh conditions, or are sold for slaughter.
