HORSEPOWER Weighs and Issues Call To Action on Bureau of Land Management Issue

America’s Wild Horses are Being Betrayed

The Issue: Under the Trump administration, federal sales of these iconic animals have more than doubled—while some federally protected mustangs are reportedly being sold for as little as $25. Once transferred to private buyers, their protections disappear, creating a loophole that can send them through middlemen and into Canadian or Mexican slaughterhouses.

At the same time, the administration has proposed cutting the Wild Horse and Burro Program by roughly 25% and removing longstanding language prohibiting the slaughter of healthy horses. These policies threaten humane alternatives such as fertility control while making mass disposal easier.

The Bureau of Land Management says it does not sell horses directly to slaughter. But a policy is meaningless when its loopholes produce the very outcome it claims to prohibit.

Wild horses are living symbols of America’s history and freedom—not surplus inventory to be rounded up, sold cheaply and discarded. Congress must preserve the slaughter ban, close the sales loophole and invest in humane, on-range management before more of these animals disappear into the slaughter pipeline.

America’s wild horses belong on America’s public lands. We must fight to keep them there.

The Action: Call your members of Congress today. Demand that they preserve the federal slaughter ban, close the sales loopholes and support humane, sustainable alternatives like the one outlined below.  Wild horses are not disposable. Congress must act before more of these protected animals disappear into the slaughter pipeline.

Science-backed fertility control, humane trapping and relocation, free-roaming pastures, and carefully monitored adoption programs are the answer!
